How did it happen?

Employed by Raytheon at the time, he noticed that microwaves from an active radar set he was working on started to melt a chocolate bar he had in his pocket. 

To verify his finding, Spencer created a high-density electromagnetic field by feeding microwave power from a magneto into a metal box from which it had no way to escape. When food was placed in the box with the microwave energy, the temperature of the food rose rapidly.

  •  The first food deliberately cooked with Spencer’s microwave was popcorn, and the second was an egg, which exploded in the face of one of the experimenters.
  • A common idea that microwave ovens cook food “from the inside out” is a misconception.
  • Any metal or conductive object placed in the microwave oven will work as an antenna and generate an electric current.

2. Inkjet Printer

Inventor – Lord Kelvin

How did it happen?

A report by Story Pick stated that Lord Kelvin an engineer, who worked with Canon, accidentally rested his hot iron on his pen. Later, the engineer got to the ink was ejected from the pen’s point. It further turned into a new principle that resulted in the invention of the inkjet printer.

It was in 1867 that Kelvin patented his Syphon Recorder, which was a printer that recorded telegraph signals, as a continuous line using an inkjet nozzle. The Syphon Recorder was essentially a piece of telecommunications equipment that did not require a skilled worker to operate. It automatically recorded telegraph messages, as a wiggling ink line on a roll of paper.

  • When you first purchase an inkjet printer, they come with starter cartridges that are filled only halfway. This practice is done for a number of reasons, primarily to keep the ink from spilling during transport

3. X-rays 

Inventor – Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen

How did it happen?

In the year 1895, Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen, a German physicist, was working with a cathode ray generator. He removed the entire air inside the fluorescent tube and then filled it with a unique gas.

When the tube was exposed to a very high electric voltage, it emitted fluorescence. He covered the tube with a black paper and then noticed that a barium-coated screen in his laboratory started to glow. He came to the conclusion that the tube was emitting an unknown invisible light or radiation.

  • Wilhelm’s wife was not impressed by her husband’s invention. After seeing the image of her hand she said: “I have seen my death.”
  • As x-rays pass through the body some of the waves are blocked and some pass through, allowing certain images to appear.
  • At one time in the 1920s people tried to use X-rays to remove unwanted hair. It was eventually banned by the FDA because it resulted in serious health issues such as cancer.

4. The Implantable Pacemaker

Inventor – Wilson Greatbatch

How did it happen? 

A medical researcher, Wilson Greatbatch, was building an oscillator to record heart sounds. Mistakenly he pulled the wrong resistor out of the box and plugged it into the circuit on which he was working.

When he assembled his device, it began to give off a rhythmic electrical pulse. The circuit pulsed for 1.8 milliseconds and then stopped for 1 second and repeated the same. Greatbatch recognized that it was a lub-dub rhythm.

  • A pacemaker is a small device that’s placed in the chest or abdomen to help control abnormal heart rhythms.
  • This device uses low-energy electrical pulses to prompt the heart to beat at a normal rate.
  • A pacemaker consists of a battery, a computerized generator, and wires with sensors called electrodes on one end.

5. Dry Cleaning

Inventor – Jean Baptiste Jolly

How did it happen?

Legend says drycleaning began in France in the 1840s with an accidental discovery that camphene turpentine spirits, a lamp fuel, had excellent cleansing powers. The accident involves a maid or quarreling lovers who tipped over a lamp onto a soiled table cloth. When the cloth dried, the soil was gone

The discovery of a revolutionary new cleaning method was completely by accident. It was only when his maid accidentally knocked a kerosene lamp over onto a tablecloth that Jolly observed that the kerosene actually made the cloth cleaner, thus spawning the idea for the very first dry cleaner.

  • Not All Stains Are Removable – Removing stains successfully is primarily dependent upon the type of the stain, the fabric of the garment, and the colorfastness of the dye. 
  • You Should Never Put Away Clothes That Have Stains – Never put away a garment that has any type of stain on it. If a stain contains sugar or any type of food they will easily attract insects that will eat away at the fibers and create holes.
  • Some Garments Can Shrink – All types of clothing can shrink if the material/fabric has not been properly preshrunk. In addition, if any segment of a specific garment was not properly stabilized during the manufacturing of the garment then it too can shrink.
