1. Bathing with Hot Water
This may be a shocker for most of you but according to Ayurveda, no matter what the season is, a healthy person should never use hot water for bathing. Always take cold water bath and when I say cold water I do not mean ice-cold water but the normal running tap water.
Hot water bath does not even heighten your senses but it makes you inactive. It may also become the reason for dark circles, weak digestion, low immunity, and stress. Pouring hot water on head is seriously damaging your hair and eyes and can also be a reason for hair-fall or even serious health problems 😡
In conditions like Arthritis, hot water can be used. Still, if you are not able to overcome this habit of hot water bath then at least switch to mild lukewarm water. Ideal direction for taking warm water and cold water bath:
- Cold Water – Start from Head and then gradually move towards the legs
- Warm Water – Start from legs and then gradually move towards the head
2. Bathing After Meals
Experiment on your body. On two different days, take a bath at the same time of the day. On day one, eat before your bath and on day two eat after your bath. Observe how your body responds, whether you feel any difference in hunger and digestion?
Most probably you will feel better in the latter scenario. This is because the process of digestion consumes a lot of energy and requires proper blood flow towards the stomach. Bathing right after a meal decreases body temperature. Now to maintain the temperature of the skin, the blood from the stomach is transferred to the skin.
As a result, your digestion process slows down, intestines become weaker and you end up suffering from constipation and other health issues. Avoid taking bath right after a meal as it will definitely cause digestive disorders 😕
3. Skipping Oil Massage
Oil massage before bath is one of the hidden secrets of an effective bath. When we massage our body with oil it easily attracts microorganisms and toxins of the surface and removes them successfully.
No Wonder why the traditional Indian bath never started with water but ended with. All lot of stress is given in this practice of bathing in the classical Ayurvedic texts. However, in this modern scenario of a busy lifestyle, it might not be practical to oil massage every day but still, we can consider it doing once a week.
Even spending just two minutes before the bath will do the wonders and you will end up having clearer and softer skin. You can use coconut oil, mustard oil or sesame oil.
4. Not Removing Dead Skin
Are you removing the dead skin? Probably not. Even after washing and cleansing, most soaps miss out on removing dead skin layer 😳
There are two important things you must do. Firstly, use a scrubber, You can use a natural scrubber. Not only it is biodegradable but also much cheaper than the plastic loofah. It is easy to use as well, just put soap on your body, wet the loofah, remove excess water from it and scrub it gently on the skin.
Using it regularly improves the blood circulation and unclogs skin pores. Another mistake some people do is they gently dry out the body with the towel, actually, a towel should be rubbed with slight pressure along the surface of the whole body. Doing these two things will remove dead skin and allow new cells to come up.
5. Massaging Shampoo into Scalp Using Fingernails
Everyone will agree that the most effective part of getting a haircut is the scalp massage. However, specialists warn not to try this at home; unless they’ve been freshly filed, fingernails will scratch your scalp. In extreme cases, it makes your skin flake 😓
Instead of digging your fingernails into your scalp, use your fingertips to work the shampoo into your strands. Just apply some shampoo into your scalp and massage gently with your fingertips.
You can also consider going for Ayurvedic Shampoos for the overall health of your scalp and hair.
This will prevent your scalp from dryness and flakes and also help in nourishing and moisturizing the scalp, keeping your hair healthy😌
6. Not Moisturizing Immediately after You Shower
No matter how organic soap you use, you may still experience dryness on the surface of your skin, especially during winters. Even pouring too much water on your skin may cause dryness and flakes on your skin.
Studies have shown that moisturizing right away after bathing provides significantly better hydration compared to delayed moisturizing or not moisturizing at all.
So, It is important to moisturize the skin after bathing to keep the skin healthy. You can use any light moisturizer you like but I would suggest you use coconut oil as all the moisturizers available in the Indian market are full of artificial fragrance and other toxins that are not healthy for the skin.
7. Washing Face in the Shower
The skin on your face is one of the most fragile parts of your body. It is way softer and sensitive than the skin on the other parts of your body. Due care must be taken into consideration to keep it healthy and moisturized.
It might save you a couple of extra minutes in the morning however, you shouldn’t be washing your face with the rest of your body. As skincare experts say, “A hot shower will cause and exacerbate fragile capillary networks in the cheeks, resulting in unattractive, visible capillary networks and worsened impaired skin conditions.
This means you might end up damaging the skin on your face as it is the most delicate part of your body. Lightly splash some water on your face using your hands and wipe the water gently with a towel.
